Another commissioned painting this August. This particular church has a fabulous history to it though.
St. Mary’s Church in Edwinstowe is a historic church with strong ties to local legend, particularly the story of Robin Hood and Maid Marian’s wedding. Local tradition suggests the marriage took place within its walls.
The church, which has been described as a welcoming place with beautiful stained glass, is believed to have been one of the earliest Christian churches in England.
While the current building dates back around 500 years, it’s built on the site of an earlier church. The parish has been a significant religious centre in Nottinghamshire since the Mercian kingdom under the Danes.
It has also been mentioned in the Doomsday Book! The church’s history is intertwined with the broader history of Edwinstowe, which was once part of the royal lands of Edward the Confessor and later William the Conqueror, indicating its existence in 1086.
